Stephen Miller, Graduate Program Director of the Biotechnology Program at UMBC, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. His laboratory studies green algae, both in the context of fundamental biological processes (such as growth and development), and in the context of biotechnology, as platforms for bioremediation and production of biofuels and higher value materials.   Dr. Miller has 15+ years experience with the administration of UMBC biology-related graduate programs, serving on the Biological Sciences graduate committee nearly every year he has been at UMBC, and was Graduate Program Director (GPD) for Biology PhD and MS programs from 2011-2015. He has been GPD of the BTEC program since the spring of 2015. Dr. Miller teaches a graduate-level course on the role of small RNAs in the regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes and developed/designed the curriculum for BTEC651 (Molecular and Cell Biology).

Sanjeev Ahuja

Sanjeev Ahuja joined the Biotechnology program as an instructor in 2008. As Senior Scientist in MedImmune’s Process Cell Culture department in Gaithersburg, MD, he manages process development, scale up, scale down, commercial support, and technology development in support of mammalian cell culture processes. He is equally involved in applying statistical principles to development of cell culture processes and data mining techniques to enhance the understanding of commercial bioprocesses. Prior to joining MedImmune, Dr. Ahuja had had extensive experience in various aspects of development and commercialization of upstream processes including bacterial fermentation, mammalian cell culture, and associated primary recovery unit operations at Biogen Idec, Human Genome Sciences, and Baxter Healthcare Corporation.

Dr. Ahuja received his M.S. in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from the Indian Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from UMBC. He primarily teaches BTEC 652: Applied Bioprocess Engineering. Additionally, he is Six Sigma certified, has one patent, and is published in a variety of journals.

Sheldon Broedel

Sheldon Broedel, a member of the UMBC faculty since 2008, has a combined 33 years of industry and academic experience. He is a founder/CEO/CSO of Athena Environmental Sciences, Inc., a diversified biotechnology company that specializes in designing, developing and manufacturing bio-based products. Under the Athena Enzyme Systems™ brand, the company makes and sells a line of biotools designed to improve the expression and recovery of recombinant proteins. Additionally, Dr. Broedel has held research and management positions with Martin Marietta Laboratories (now Lockheed-Martin), Dorlin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (formerly ChekTec Corporation). In 2005, Dr. Broedel received UMBC’s Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award. He has a diverse range of scientific publications, holds five issued patents, and has designed, reduced to practice and launched more than 160 products. Dr. Broedel and his development teams have received ten SBIR grant awards for their work with infectious diseases, environmental products and diagnostic tests. Athena currently has a portfolio of over 500 products serving world-wide biotechnology and consumer markets.

Dr. Broedel completed his B.S. in Biology at the State University of New York at Geneseo and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Microbial Genetics at UMBC. He also holds positions as the Associate Graduate Program Director and Instructor for the MPS: Biotechnology at UMBC and as an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Marcia Federici

Marcia Federici

Dr. Federici has over 25 years of experience in the biotechnology industry. She has held various positions of increasing managerial responsibilities in several different biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. She is an expert in protein structural analysis, bioanalytical method development and biopharmaceutical product formulation development and manufacturing. During her tenure in several companies, Dr.Federici frequently had the responsibility for developing, presenting, and defending product approval strategies to the FDA and various international regulatory agencies. Dr. Federici was a contributing author of ICH Q6B international guidelines on biotechnology specifications and several industry position papers on product comparability and bioanaytical methodologies.

Marcia is currently self-employed as a biotechnology consultant. She authors regulatory documents for investigational drugs and license applications and provides expert advice on biopharmaceutical drug development and regulatory approval strategies.

Toby Gouker

Toby Gouker, an adjunct with UMBC since 2011, has over 33 years of management experience in industry and academia. Currently serving as a Principal for Two BG Consulting, Dr. Gouker advises various educational institutions and professional associations on training and education program development.  Previously, he was the Director of Operations at Certisusa where he managed several biotech facilities, an Engineering Research and Development Manager at W.R. Grace & Co commercializing power plant and other source air pollution control products, and a Project Leader at Exxon Research and Engineering Co.

Dr. Gouker's additionally has served as the Provost at Lyman Spalding Institute, where led the effort to build a global continuing education program for scientists and engineers to ensure pharmaceutical workforce capacity, the Vice President of University Affairs at American Graduate University, where he functioned as the lead academic and operating officer and Executive Director at Laureate Education, Inc. where he led National Technological University through its merger with Walden University.

Dr. Gouker received his Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences from Walden University, his M.B.A. at the University of Houston, and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Gouker is also an Adjunct Faculty member at American Graduate University and DeVry University.

Michelle Jones

Michelle Jones has over 20 years of experience in various accounting management positions. Currently, she serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Troika Entertainment, a touring musical theater company that produces shows throughout North America and the world. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing all of the financial, administrative and human resources aspects of the company.

Prior to joining Troika Entertainment, Ms. Jones held several Corporate Controller positions managing the day-to-day accounting of accounts receivables and collections, accounts payable, payroll and financial reporting.  Ms. Jones has also been responsible for year-end financial and bank audits, reporting and filing payroll, sales tax and personal property taxes, budgeting and forecasting.  She has also participated in several system implementations, worked on acquisitions, helped develop and complete Sarbanes-Oxley documentation and has developed compensation plans used in labor union negotiations.

Ms. Jones holds a B.S. in Business from the University of Baltimore, and a joint M.S. in Accounting and Business Advisory Services from Towson University and the University of Baltimore. She is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Keith R. Kirkwood

Mr. Kirkwood has almost 30 years of leadership and management experience in both industry and the U.S. Army. He is currently an Engineering Program Manager for Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems in Linthicum, MD. He has been with Northrop Grumman for 18 years in a variety of leadership and management positions. His assignments include serving as the Communications Integrated Product Team lead for the Tactical Exploitation System, Department Systems Engineering Manager for the C4ISR Department, Lead Systems Engineer and Chief Engineer for the Distributed Common Ground System – Army (Version 4), and the manager for the Processing Architectures Department in the Advanced Concepts & Technology Division. Keith has also served as technical business development engineer and has been a functional manager for the previous 9 years.

Prior to joining Northrop Grumman, Keith served as a Cavalry officer and a Systems Automation Acquisition officer for the United States Army for 11 years. As an acquisition officer, he was responsible for the software lifecycle management for the All Source Analysis System (ASAS). As a Cavalry officer, Keith was fortunate to be able to witness firsthand the fall of the East-West German border.

Keith’s principal areas of interest include cyber security, system of systems engineering, processing architectures, intelligence processing systems, component based software engineering and model driven engineering.

Antonio Moreira

Antonio Moreira is the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and a professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. Moreira has both previous (Schering-Plough Corporation) and ongoing biotechnology industry contacts and experience. He draws from first-hand work in research and development, scale-up and introduction to commercialization of biotechnology products, such alpha interferon. Dr. Moreira has an active research program in bioprocess engineering and is a consultant to various biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

He has received various awards including a NATO Senior Fellowship and the James Aggalloco Award from the Parenteral Drug Association. He served as the President for the Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering; he is immediate past-chair of the Council for Biotechnology Centers for the BIO Industry Organization, and serves on scientific advisory boards for various organizations. Dr. Moreira is Chairman of Peritus Consultants, Inc. an international consulting corporation. He is also a graduate of Leadership Maryland, class of 1998.

He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto in Portugal and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Moreira is the Graduate Program Director for the Graduate Certificate in Biochemical Regulatory Engineering. He currently teaches BTEC 660: Regulatory Issues in Biotechnology and BTEC 662: Good Manufacturing Practices and Bioprocesses.

Jonathan Powell

Jonathan Powell, a Senior Program Manager for CACI, has over two decades of leadership experience both in industry and through service in the U.S. Navy. In his current position, he leads large complex software development efforts for the U.S. Army. Previously, Mr. Powell was a Project Executive for IBM’s Corporate Global Pandemic Strategy Task Force.  His other assignments at IBM included leadership roles on software implementations for various Federal Civilian and Classified organizations.  During this time he also achieved IBM certifications as a Senior Project Manager and Java Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Designer.  As an officer in the Navy, Mr. Powell was a Submariner as well as a Regional Director for Admissions at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Mr. Powell received his Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and his M.B.A. from the University of Maryland. He also holds several advanced certificates, including a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University, Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM), and the Cyber Security credential Security+.  Mr. Powell’s written work has been featured in numerous publications, including the magazines PM Network and Contract Management, respectively, as well as the journal CrossTalk

In 2015, Mr. Powell was appointed to the Maryland Cybersecurity Council by the State Attorney General.

Irina Ramos

Irina Ramos has over 7 years of experience in Biopharmaceutical Downstream Processing Development. As Scientist in MedImmune’s Purification Process Sciences department in Gaithersburg, MD, she manages downstream process development and optimization, scale up, technology transfer activities into cGMP manufacturing to supply clinical trials and contributes to regulatory submissions.

Dr. Ramos received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Oporto, School of Engineering and her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from UMBC. She primarily teaches BTEC 653.

Timothy Wood

Timothy Wood is currently employed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center as supervisor of the Department of Clinical Investigation, Research Operations Service Chemistry Section. His work is diverse and includes a variety of interests involving basic, translational, and applied chemistry research. His principal strengths include conducting collaborative and independent research using microbiological, molecular biology, structural biology and biochemistry techniques with significant experience in gene cloning, transcription regulation, recombinant protein expression, purification, and characterization through mutational analysis, functional assays and troubleshooting.

Dr. Wood’s previous research experience includes training and post-doctoral work in macromolecular crystallography at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) and The Skaggs Institute of Chemical Biology located in La Jolla, California. While at TSRI, Wood’s primary focus was on understanding the chemical mechanism of chromophore synthesis of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). He also worked on bacterial proteins involved in bacterial stress responses and pathogenesis. Wood’s interest in bacterial pathogenesis began in graduate school at UMBC where he studied gene regulation under Dr. Richard E. Wolf, Jr.

Dr. Wood completed his B.S. in Biochemistry at Grove City College and his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at UMBC. He currently teaches BTEC 650: Applied Biochemistry.

James Ziegler

James Ziegler, a financial officer with 25 years of experience, is currently employed at Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) in Baltimore, MD. In his current position, Mr. Ziegler manages a staff of seven professionals and is responsible for all facets of Accounting, Financial Reporting, Cash Management, Human Resources and Traffic related activities. During his tenure at MASN, he has successfully implemented a five year business plan and assisted in the network achieving its short and long term financial goals.

Mr. Ziegler holds a B.S. in Accounting from Towson University and a M.B.A. with a Finance Concentration from Loyola College. He is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
